Support Independent Living

Thoughtful technology can remove small obstacles, reinforce familiar routines, and help approved family members stay connected without making the home feel clinical. The resident should understand and approve what is being monitored and who receives information.

— SAFER MOVEMENT AND EASIER CONTROL —

• Turn on a gentle pathway from the bed to the bathroom when someone gets up at night.

• Light stairs, hallways, and entrances automatically before a person reaches them.

• Control lights, thermostats, shades, televisions, and selected appliances by voice.

• Place easy-to-reach wireless buttons beside a bed, chair, walker, or favorite seat.

• Reduce bending and reaching by automating low outlets, lamps, and hard-to-reach controls.

• Create one-touch scenes for waking, resting, watching television, or going to bed.

— VISIBILITY, HEARING, AND COMMUNICATION —

• Flash selected lights when the doorbell rings for someone who may not hear it.

• Announce a visitor, open door, appliance timer, or important alert through compatible speakers.

• Display the front door camera on an easy-to-see screen before the resident answers.

• Simplify video calls with favorite contacts or caregiver check-ins.

• Increase task lighting for reading, cooking, medication organization, and nighttime movement.

• Provide large, consistent controls instead of relying entirely on small phone screens.

— ROUTINES AND HELPFUL REMINDERS —

• Give spoken or displayed reminders for appointments, hydration, meals, or household routines.

• Remind the resident when a protected door, refrigerator, or garage remains open.

• Confirm that selected lights, locks, and appliances are in their normal bedtime state.

• Provide a reminder when a routinely used cabinet, room, or appliance has not been accessed.

• Create morning and evening sequences that reduce the number of separate tasks.

• Adjust temperature automatically to maintain a comfortable approved range.

— FAMILY AND CAREGIVER AWARENESS —

• Notify an approved contact about unusual inactivity without using an indoor camera.

• Report a missed morning, meal, medication-area, or bedtime routine when appropriate sensors support it.

• Alert family to water leaks, temperature problems, smoke or CO alarms, or prolonged power loss.

• Notify an approved person if an exterior door opens during a restricted time window.

• Provide a simple “I’m okay” button or check-in routine for the resident to use voluntarily.

• Allow temporary, accountable access for family, caregivers, or service providers.

• Create a privacy-respecting activity summary using only the sensors the resident approves.

These are convenience and awareness features—not medical devices, guaranteed fall detection, emergency response, or substitutes for professional care and monitored life-safety services.
